Göran Söllscher, born in Växjö, Sweden in 1955 and raised in Kalmar, is a renowned Swedish guitarist. He began playing guitar at the age of 7 and further honed his skills at the Malmö Conservatory (1975-77) and the Royal Conservatory of Copenhagen (1976-79).
One of his notable performances includes his rendition of The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’, originally released on the album Revolver in 1966. Unlike the original, which features Paul McCartney’s vocals with a double string quartet, Söllscher plays this iconic song on a custom-made 11-string guitar. Despite the complexity of more strings, he flawlessly delivers a beautiful cover of the classic track.
During his education, Söllscher gained recognition as a talented musician, notably winning first prize at the ‘Concours International de Guitare’ in Paris in 1978. His career has taken him around the globe, performing with esteemed orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York, under the batons of conductors like Sir Alexander Gibson, Claudio Abbado, and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos.
Söllscher’s repertoire spans from Renaissance to contemporary music, showcasing his versatility from Bach to The Beatles. He has toured extensively across Europe, Japan, China, North and South America, and holds a prominent position in the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Additionally, he imparts his knowledge as a guitar instructor at the University of Lund in Sweden, leaving a lasting impact on the world of music.
